Middle Boy needs to read two more chapters of Animal Farm and take notes over it.

This is something he can easily do WITHOUT my help.

Tonight I was frustrated with him.  Instead of doing this reading after school he chose to read a novel. 

I asked him about priorities.  He kept insisting that he WAS reading.  Yes...he was, but not what has a due date or assignment associated.  He actually read for TWO HOURS after school.

During that time the Animal Farm homework could have EASILY been done.

I am not asking the right questions.  I am not helping them prioritize appropriately.
