Middle Boy had to do a life skills assessment for the Branching Out program and since he is in foster care and turned age 15.
If he were staying in foster care this would be re-evaluated every six months to make sure he understood "life".
It is an interesting questionnaire. The questions range from "Do you know how to make a sandwich?" to "What are two signs you know you are pregnant?" to "Which is the best deal on a loan?"
Middle Boy really wanted to be sarcastic. We explained to him if he is sarcastic then he will be going to classes to learn how to make a sandwich. If it is not his desired outcome then he should do his best to be truthful.
There are about ten categories in the assessment. It is a great program that would likely benefit ALL TEENS.
There are some things about it which are really cool. You can take drivers ed through them, free of charge. For every dollar you save toward college they will match it. For every thousand dollars you save toward a car they will give you five thousand dollars.
You can remain in the program until you are 24 years old. Their goal is to help foster kids become productive citizens once they age out.
Middle Boy is signed up, because although I can teach him a lot of these things we don't have much time.
Praises for amazing programs which can help foster kids. The one thing which makes me sad is if the foster parent doesn't know about the program then they don't get signed up. My goal would be for EVERY FOSTER CHILD to at least KNOW about this program.
